We have the ability to stop Nestlé and take back the power we’ve given it. To do this we can all start by boycotting Nestlé products, as consumerism plays a large role in a company’s abilities. Past boycotts have proven to be effective, for instance, the 1970s boycotts regarding infant formula created awareness for the issue and directly led to new legislation, with over seventy countries today implementing the marketing rules that companies should follow in order to protect mothers and babies. Nestlé has also ended it's more disgraceful labeling strategies after boycotts exposed them. In 2014, Nestlé promised to stop mislabeling its formula as the “natural start” however, the company continues to defend the idea that its formula protects babies and is the “gentle start,” meaning that more work needs to be done. It is especially important to boycott Nestlé’s chocolate brands in order to not support cocoa plantations, and as Nestlé isn’t the only brand that sources cocoa unethically, it is important to know what products are okay to support (Nestlé Boycott). Chocolates with Fair Trade labels are sourced sustainably and ethically and there are lists of ethical chocolate from trustworthy sources, for instance, the Food Empowerment Project has created a list of vegan chocolates that they do and do not recommend on the basis of the sourcing of the cocoa.
